Difference between a KVN piston valve & a globe valve

7 July, 2026

The KVN piston valve from KLINGER is a proven product that has been used successfully for decades in a wide range of industries and applications. Based on experience, the valve offers significant advantages over conventional globe valves.

The main advantages of KLINGER piston valves are:

(1) Constant operating torque – Smooth opening and closing.
(2) Protection against erosion of the seating surface – Longer service life.
(3) Self-cleaning effect – prevents deposition of impurities on the seating surface.
(4) Easy maintenance – Fast and efficient “inline” serviceability.

(1) Constant operating torque

KVN piston valve

Constant torque progression from open to closed position. The piston moves through the valve seats and is not pressed against a seat.

Globe valve

When closing, a torque increase occurs when the piston presses onto the seat. When opening the valve, a torque peak occurs when the piston is pulled away from the seat.

(2) Protection against erosion of the seating surface

In the open position, the valve seats are not directly in the media flow due to the construction of the valve. This prevents deposition of impurities on the seating surface.

Globe valve

In the open position, the valve seat is exposed to the media flow. This can cause erosion and damage the seat.

(3) Self-cleaning effect

Particles in the flow can adhere to the inner surface of the lower valve ring. When closing the valve, the particles are pushed back, which ensures a self-cleaning effect.

Globe valve

Particles from the flow adhere to the surface of the seat. When closing the valve, these particles are pressed into the seat, leading to leakage.

(4) Maintenance

The KVN piston valve is designed for easy “inline” maintenance,
without the need to remove the valve from the pipeline. For safe operation,
maintenance should always be performed when the valve is depressurized.
All essential parts are available as spare parts, allowing
maintenance to be carried out quickly, easily, and efficiently.

Spare parts:
(1) Seat rings
(2) Spacer
(3) Stem
(4) Piston
(5) Complete top flange

The KVN piston valve celebrated its 100th anniversary last year.
This product was the pioneer in piston valve technology.
